About Me

My name is Warren Buck. I am beginning my fourth year teaching mathematics at University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois. I teach algebra to subfreshmen (eighth graders) and calculus to seniors. Based on my exposure to higher mathematics, I have a strong belief that having students write about mathematics is essential for them to understand and become proficient in the subject. Two of my coworkers and fellow subfreshmen core members, Janet Morford and Steve Rayburn, highly encouraged me to take part in the University of Illinois Writing Project (UIWP) during the summer of 2011.

Purpose

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the UIWP. In this portfolio, I have included many artifacts demonstrating how I have benefitted from participating in the UIWP.

Project

The University of Illinois Writing Project (UIWP) is a network site for the National Writing Project (NWP), whose mission is to focus "the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation's educators on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners". Currently, the NWP is a federally funded program; unfortunately, this is likely the last year that the NWP will receive federal funding. The UIWP completed its fourth summer institute in July of 2011.
